Monarch High School opened in the fall of 1998 with an inaugural year consisting of only freshmen and sophomores from the communities of Louisville and Superior. Monarch football played its first game on September 4, 1998, against the Holyoke Dragons in Holyoke, Colorado. The team won its first game the following week, defeating the Hayden Tigers.

Monarch Football won its first league championship in 2000, beginning a tradition of competitive excellence that has continued through the present day; most recently, the Coyotes claimed league titles in 2024 and 2025, highlighting more than two decades of sustained success on the field.

Monarch Football reached the state playoffs in just its second year of existence in 1999, establishing a standard of success that the program has upheld, most recently by qualifying for the state playoffs in each of the last four years.

In 2002, Monarch capped a perfect 14–0 season by defeating the Golden Demons 42–35 at Centaurus High School. The team captured the school’s second championship by finishing 13–1 and defeating the Denver South Rebels 17–14 at Mile High Stadium.

In 2007, Monarch finished the season 12–2 and earned a runner-up finish to the Pueblo West Cyclones in the 4A State Championship game at Mile High Stadium. Monarch lost the game 21-14.

The Coyotes have also made three additional appearances in the state playoff semi-finals in 2009 (Heritage), 2011 (Pine Creek), and 2013 (Pine Creek).

Over 28 seasons, Monarch Football has compiled an overall record of 224–92, with 23 of those victories coming during playoff competition. During that span, the program also achieved a 24-game winning streak and a 39-game regular-season winning streak. Monarch will begin its 29th season this fall!

Monarch Football has produced more than 80 All-State players, ranging from Honorable Mention to First-Team, demonstrating the program’s long-standing commitment to developing elite talent recognized across Colorado. In addition, Monarch has produced five All-Colorado selections and the 4A Player of the Year (Ethan Marks, Denver Post, 2012).

More than 50 Monarch Football athletes have gone on to compete at the collegiate level, carrying the Coyotes’ legacy to programs all across the country. Former Monarch players have continued their careers across every level of college football.
